Choquequirao Trek 3 Days

Choquequirao Treks

Choquequirao is an archaeological site located in the Vilcabamba mountain range of Peru, near Cusco. Often referred to as the “sister city” of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is an ancient Inca citadel that holds great historical and cultural significance.

The name Choquequirao translates to “Cradle of Gold” in the Quechua language, reflecting the site’s rich history and architectural grandeur. The citadel was built by the Inca civilization during the 15th and 16th centuries and served as a religious, administrative, and agricultural center.

Choquequirao remained hidden and relatively unknown for centuries, and its remote location made it challenging to access. However, in recent years, it has gained popularity as an alternative trekking destination to Machu Picchu, offering a more off-the-beaten-path experience for adventurous travelers.

The trek to Choquequirao is demanding and requires a good level of fitness. The trail is approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) round trip and involves steep ascents and descents through rugged mountain terrain. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, deep canyons, and snow-capped peaks.

Visiting Choquequirao allows travelers to explore the expansive archaeological complex, which covers an area of about 1,800 hectares. The site consists of well-preserved terraces, plazas, temples, and residential areas, showcasing the remarkable Inca engineering and architectural skills. Notable features include the main square, the Temple of the Sun, and the Llama Sector, where llamas were once raised for ceremonial purposes.

One of the highlights of Choquequirao is its sense of isolation and tranquility. Unlike Machu Picchu, which attracts large crowds of tourists, Choquequirao remains relatively uncrowded, allowing visitors to experience the site’s beauty and historical significance in a more serene setting.

Due to its remote location, there are limited facilities and services available at Choquequirao. Visitors are advised to come prepared with camping gear, food, and other necessary supplies. It is also recommended to visit with a knowledgeable guide who can provide insights into the site’s history and help navigate the challenging trekking route.

Choquequirao offers a unique and authentic experience for those seeking to explore lesser-known Inca ruins and immerse themselves in the stunning natural landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. It provides a glimpse into the ancient Inca civilization and its remarkable architectural achievements, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
